Thank you for the persimmons
A big thank you to a recent trail student, and her mother, for these lovely persimmons (柿 kaki). They are a sure sign that autumn has arrived.
Here's a question for you, "What other name are persimmons known by in the UK?"
And if you'd like to arrange a free trial lesson:

Hang Out the Laundry
We used this idea in our young learners' Sprouts class. They were studying about clothes as part of Happy Valley Level 1 Unit 4, and we needed some kind of tactile activity to encourage them to remember the names of various clothes.
The original idea was for them to 'hang out' the laundry but in practice it proved much easier for them to 'bring in' the laundry due to small fingers and mini-sized washing pegs!
Insey Winsey Spider
Here's a video of a Insey Wincey Spider craft we made last Saturday in the Kinder class.
Over the years this simple Insey Wincey / Itsy Bitsy / Incy Wincy Spider craft has served me well in many classes, especially around June time because of the rainy season here in Japan. The keen-eyed amongst you may recognise it's based on the Insey Winsey Spider game from Orchard Toys.
If you'd like to download this simple spider song craft, here's a link to the printable file:

Sprouts Chirashi
We finally finished designing the Sprouts Class chirashi. It took a lot longer than expected!
We also gave the Sprouts Class it's own page on the englishpool website which you can find here:

Thank you!
Knock them down
We have been having fun with these little Pinnochios this week in our Sprouts classes.
Great for practicing, 'Here you are','Thank you' when we pass the ball, and of course for counting the number of Pinnochios knocked down!
Goes great with 1 to 10 song, which you can find here on YouTube
An Origami Fish
Received this delightful origami fish from one of our younger students yesterday.
A perfect match for one of my favourite children's books Hooray for Fish; stripey fish, scary fish, elefish and origami paperfish!
Yummy Yucky
Two new books for the library. Yummy Yucky and Quiet Loud by Leslie Patricelli.
Yummy Yucky is actually a replacement for a lost copy, it was always a go to book when teaching food topics and has been sorely missed.
Quiet and Loud is along the same lines and looks like it will work well when teaching opposites.

Autumn Colours
Every year, in our Sprouts classes, we have a theme of autumn/fall colours. We ask the children and mothers to bring in any interesting leaves they may find. We then arrange look at and talk about the leaves, noting colour, shape and anything else that may be of interest.
As well as leaves, we also receive other autumn items such as chestnuts, acorns and pine cones. All create a great theme that is fun to talk about.
Just in case any of the children and mother pairs forget to bring in any leaves, I also take a walk through Toyama Park collecting various items. The above picture shows my haul of autumn goodies, including various leaves, pine cones types and some very spherical acorns.
Something else we also do is to select a few of the most interesting leaves, arrange them in a laminate pouch and then feed the pouch through the laminating machine. This encases the leaves in plastic as shown below. The children can then take the pouch home as a reminder.
(Beware: laminating leaves is probably not recommended by the laminating machine manufacturer!!)
